Powassan Virus - Tick Spray & Removal - Fairfield & New Haven County, CT

Doctors throughout the state of Connecticut have been recently reporting about a rare tick-borne virus, which is very similar to Lyme's disease that has been appearing within ticks that have been tested in the Bridgeport and North Branford areas. The name of the incurable and potentially deadly tick borne virus is called the Powassan Virus. Connecticut town officials have been sending out warnings to residents to exercise extreme caution and take preventative measures if they are planning on spending time in heavily wooded areas during the upcoming spring and summer months, which is the time of year when ticks are more commonplace.

The symptoms of the Powassan virus include, fever, headache, stiff neck, vomiting, weakness, confusion, loss of coordination, speech difficulties, and seizures. It can effect its victims for over a month. The virus infects the central nervous system and can cause inflammation of the brain and meningitis, which effects the membranes that surround your spinal cord and brain. There are currently no vaccines or medicines available that will treat or ward off the potentially deadly disease.

Although the virus is still considered to be rare, and there have not yet been any reported cases of human infection in the state of Connecticut, the fact that it has been discovered in ticks that were tested in the New Haven and Fairfield County areas has lead to recent warnings to be issued and headline news stories to be broadcasted and published on the matter. In order to protect yourself, it is recommended that you utilize bug spray, wear long pants and long sleeves outdoors, avoiding wooded areas, and checking yourself for ticks after every time you have been outside.
