In recent years, the department of health has put a tremendous amount of effort into researching the spread of Lyme disease throughout the state of Connecticut. Lyme disease is an inflammatory disease initially distinguished by symptoms which include a rash, headache, fever, and chills, and can eventually lead to arthritis and neurological and cardiac disorders, caused by bacteria that are transmitted by ticks. Once a person has contracted Lyme Disease, it is essential for them to be treated with the necessary antibiotics immediately in order to fight off the infection and fully recover.

Ticks will generally exist in heavily wooded locations or areas where high levels of grass and brushes persist. They live off eating the blood of their hosts. There is a large abundance of deer ticks located in the Southbury area, we have listed some of the most popular below.

American Dog Tick - These are one of the most common types of ticks in the Connecticut area and are generally located in locations where there is low llevels of tree shade. They are know to feed on all sizes and types of animals from squirrels to humans, and have the potential to transmit the Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever disease. Their appearance can be distinguished by a dark brown body with a gray colored dorsal sclerite.

Black-legged Tick (deer tick) - Black-legged ticks typically dwell in heavily wooded and bushy areas. They are not capable of jumping and usually will attach on to animals or humans as they brush up against trees, grass, or bushes. Black-legged Ticks commonly feed on white-tailed deer and are capable of transmitting Lyme Disease to humans. When they bite, it is usually painless and if a human is infected with Lyme Disease, they will not notice until the symptoms begin to set in.

Lone Star Tick - You can recognize the female Lone Star tick by the unique white mark, which is in the shape of a star and is located in the center of its back. These species of ticks are capable of transmitting numerous types of tick-borne diseases, although they do not spread Lyme Disease. When bitten by lone star ticks, it is possible for a similar circular rash to develop, which may lead the infected person to believe that they are showing the initial symptoms of Lyme Disease.

Ticks are capable of attaching themselves to any location on your body. They will commonly attach themselves to your shoes as you walk through heavily wooded and brush areas, and then quickly crawl up your leg inside of your clothing. Whenever you have been in a wooded area where ticks thrive, it is essential that you perform a tick check on your body and detach any ticks that may be located immediately.
